I am happy to say this is my favorite recording so far. All of it. It is a sad song, but hopeful, yet in reality tragic and voyeuristic.
Hiking In The Rain (Jam)
• November 17th, 2009Remarkably, this song was perfect for a long jam. A bit of dissonant, though melodic chords and a slow tempo. We did this on Sunday November 15 a few times. We had a great session and I am already anxious to have them back for more! Me on my Telecaster, Jake Aspector on the Parker, Ron Stern on the W bass and Chris Knable on drums.
Sara Boe Sings KT Tunstall
• November 11th, 2009My friend Wendy sent me this live recording of her 12 year old daughter singing a KT Tunstall song with piano accompanyment and I was really impressed with her singing chops. Great emotion, timing, tonal consistency. I tweaked the recording a bit using Audacity, to boost her vocal EQ and you can hear her very clearly. Lets make sure she does more!
Holding On
• November 3rd, 2009Acoustic guitar, congas, hoarse voice and fretless bass. A visual song.
Hiking in the Rain
• October 6th, 2009“Hiking in the rain, like friends I hardly knew”. A Facebook comment I made which stuck in my head and now is this song. The 12 string part is something I have been playing for a few weeks although it sounds a bit like “Horse with No Name”. I layered on a lead guitar, keyboard, drums, congas and a double vocal track. Check it out.
Could Be Girls
• September 24th, 2009After listening to a week’s worth of Zappa records, I wrote and recorded this hyper funk inspired song. Over a very fast drum track, I played my Strat, Fretless Bass, then trumpet harmonies, and guitar lead harmonies. I added some arpeggiated Triton keyboards at the end. This was fun.
Alone On A Chair With You
• September 1st, 2009UPDATED recording!
After my one intimate, last person performance I had at Bayshore, I realized that some people were responding to my words and talking back to me. That is why it is kind of fun to say things like “no one hears me” in the lyrics. Anyway, I did this while I was alone for 30 minutes and added a few things to it later. It is a quiet acoustic song with a conga accompanyment I layered on later. I like Congas, did I say that?
Tough Stuff
• August 31st, 2009This was our beginning jam. Very fun and a driving beat. Three guitars in the tub.
Alone In A Chair
• August 31st, 2009This is a song I recorded while on the phone (an earlier post). Decided to try it with the group. Lets do it again!
Hombre Natural
• August 31st, 2009One of Jake’s favorites with a new latin spice. I started playing trumpet at this session and was pretty satified with the improv vibe. My new congas are in the background between the horn parts.
The Infuriator
• August 26th, 2009I was instigating a few vibes while answering a phone call. It is an interesting conversation, perhaps. Perhaps not. I ended up jamming with the busy signal after a hangup.
Buddy Holly: Learning The Game (from the Apartment Tapes)
• August 24th, 2009This is just about the most beautiful song sang in the most beautiful way. Buddy Holly recorded himself in his apartment, you can even hear his wife in the background. He was one of the first shining stars. Unfortunately I heard this song as background music to scenes of his airplane crash from a you tube video. The guitar playing is all soul.
down
• July 12th, 2009Made this last night after a hiatus of a month or so. I mic’ed all the amps, so no direct input to the recorder. My Line 6 has a crystal sound I have been tweaking to get the Jerry Garcia warmth. I stumbled on the drum beat, which fit the song perfectly. I had made this up long ago when I used to jam with Jake Alspector and Ron Stern at the 30th Street rent-a-studios in NYC. Fun. They are coming over this weekend to jam. I will do my best to record our session. I have enough microphones.
Abilene
• June 26th, 2009I don’t know much about this song, but I really like it. Jake’s voice is very close to Willie Nelson’s twang and he is so soulful.
